Chevreuse, Marie de Rohan-Montbazon, duchess de
(1600-1679)
   nobility
The wife of the duke de Luynes, then of Claude de Lorraine, duke de Chevreuse, Marie de Rohan-Montbazon, duchess de Chevreuse, who was an intimate of Queen anne of Austria, led a life filled with intrigues and amorous adventures. The discovery of a plot against Cardinal richelieu, for example, cut short the life of her young lover Cha-lais (an ancestor of talleyrand). And she attempted, during one of her exiles, to bring Charles IV, duke of Lorraine, to whom she was mistress, into a conspiracy against court figures. Returning to France after the death of louis x III, she took part in the "Importants" plot (1643), comprised mainly of those of Richelieu's victims who, hoping to gain revenge after the death of Louis xiII, planned to eliminate Cardinal mazarin. Just before marrying the marquis de Laigues, she also was involved in the fronde. The duchess de Chevreuse had an influence on François, duke de La Rochefoucauld, with whom she had an intimate friendship.
